TUL 028 – You are the average of the five people you associate with most!

“You are the average of the five people that you associate with most”    – Jim Rohn

The quote is short and sweet, right to the point.  Who you hang around matters.  What influences you surround yourself with matters.

Many of us learned this as children.  You are who you hang around, for better or worse.

Join me on today’s episode of THE UNSTOPPABLE LIFE as I break down not only the truth found within this phrase, but just as importantly an exercise to help you best apply it to your life!

Here’s the short version: Get some paper or get your notes app and write down the following in order.

  • The 5 people you spend you associate with the most (not just physically present with but influences like authors, books, podcasts, etc… as well)
  • What kind of person do I want to be? What are the qualities you want to possess? (to be healthy, express a remarkable faith, succeed at business dealings, competence, good with people, make wise decisions, disciplined)
  • What are the 3 primary qualities (good or bad) that I see in those 5 people? (lazy, fun, good listener, complainer, cheater, smart, could be anything)
  • Do their qualities match who I want to become? Do they elevate me or bring me down? 
  • Who are the top 5 people who embody the qualities I desire? (could be known by you or not, living or dead)
  • How can I increase my contact with them? (Direct contact, exposed to products of their work, visualize being with them)

You can make significant changes in your life and an enormous factor in your ability to do so has to do with the company you keep, the influences you place around yourself. 

Who are yours?  Are they bringing you up or down?  Closer to your goals or further away? 

Take some time this week and listen in to the show and begin to take a hard look at the company you keep.

TUL 027 – Life Lessons From March Madness

3-2-1….It’s GOOOOD!!!

It’s March and Madness is in the air!  You don’t even have to be a basketball lover to get hooked on these few week’s of the year that feature, perennial powerhouses verses their meager foes.  The “Big Dance” as it’s called is truly one of sports great displays.  68 teams from every league clash to make a deep run and the fortunate one that makes it through unscathed is crowned national champion!

It certainly makes for great entertainment, cheering for the underdog, waiting on the edge of your seat for the buzzer beating shot, cheering on your favorite team.

 But what if there are transferable principles from March Madness that can make a difference in your own life?

Well, I’m glad you asked, because I believe that their most definitely are!

On today’s episode of THE UNSTOPPABLE LIFE I spend a little time breaking it down for us.  Sport is a great teacher for life and there is much for us to learn from it.  As you entertain yourself with a dose of March Madness this year, consider these principles and how they can, and will, make a difference in your life today.

  1. Don’t ever count yourself out!  It’s not over until it’s over.  As an avid Purdue Basketball fan I know this all too well (However, this year will be different)!   The last two NCAA tourney were gut wrenching but nevertheless prove this point (listen to episode 027 to get the full effect). Life gets tough, maybe circumstances are stacked against you….don’t count yourself out!  Teams that pull off the upset are teams that believe they can!  If you don’t believe you can -you won’t- simple as that.  Your belief in yourself is enough to set you apart and take you to another level in life.
  2. You must be prepared.  The best team won’t always win, but the team the out prepares and outworks the other nearly always will!  They don’t just show up and become Cinderella.  It’s the stage they need, sure, but maybe more importantly it is the belief that they can do it!  They put in the work, and if you want to make strides in life, YOU MUST PREPARE.
  3. Predict the unpredictable.  Every year after the first weekend of the tourney they always announce that out of X hundreds of thousands of brackets there are 1 or 2 or no perfect brackets left.  The only thing you can predict with any certainty is that you can’t predict anything!  The best basketball analysts in the world don’t even come close to getting it right.  Like me, I’m sure you’ve seen your wife or the random coworker, who couldn’t name one player from any team, chose based on the mascots and beat you!  It will be uncertain and it is all about how you adjust.  Life is eerily similar.  We can try to predict and plan things out but life will always surprise you, throw you off, bring something to the table that you never saw coming and if you can’t adjust you will lose.

In episode 026 Chris Norton also touched on some of these necessary qualities (attitude and effort).  Also mix in a good dose of preparation and you have a recipe of champions!  Those principles will take you further than you thought possible if you apply them to your work, life, goals.  The ball is truly in your court!

So let March Maddness be a lesson to us all, may it make us better at our jobs, better in our families, better personally, better at life.

At the end of it all someone will lift a championship trophy and no one can ever take that away.  Why not you?  Whatever sphere or venue of life is most pressing for you, give it all you got, and prepare well, control your attitude, effort, and prepare well and you’ll go far.

TUL 026 – Interview: Chris Norton Finds Happiness Through Adversity

What are you shooting for?  Odds are it’s not big enough!

Today’s guest on THE UNSTOPPABLE LIFE has a story that will inspire, encourage, motivate, and challenge you.  My guest, Chris Norton, has been through far more adversity and change in his young life than most of us will have to deal with in all of ours.  After a college football injury left him entirely paralyzed Chris was determined to not give up and to refused to let that be the final chapter to his story.

Chris set the nearly impossible goal of walking across the stage at his college graduation at a point where he could not even support the weight of his own head!  The Doctors told him he had only a 3% chance of ever moving anything again.  Chris’ incredible determination, willpower, faith, and work ethic helped him accomplish this impossible goal!

His story has been documented through most major national media outlets, and videos floating around the web of his walk are in the multi-millions.  He came on the show today to share a candid conversation with me chronicling his journey and explaining how he dealt with it and what’s he’s learned along the way.  As we recently discussed the topic of happiness on the past couple episodes of the show, you’ll find that Chris’ perspective and insights are the perfect culmination to the series.

TUL 025 – Happiness: Part 2

Can happiness be controlled? If so, what can be done to maximize happiness in your own life?

On today’s edition of THE UNSTOPPABLE LIFE we cover those questions and more.  There is an abundance of research on the topic and studies have shown that 50% of our happiness is already wired in!  That’s right, our genetics make up half.  However, there is another 50% that is malleable!  The surprising finding there is that only 10% is made up of the extrinsic things that were are told to focus on most.  Things like money, status, health, possessions, and rewards.   10%!  That, of course, leaves 40%.  That percentage is made up of intrinsic behaviors.  Things that are inherently satisfying in and of themselves.  Things like personal growth, close and meaningful relationships, community service, purpose.  

These truths are highlighted to an even greater degree in what is widely understood to be the most extensive study ever conducted on evaluating human life.  The Harvard Grant and Glueck studies.

What they found in their 75+ year study is that “Good relationships keep us happier and healthier”

On today’s show I go into greater detail and line out the “3 Goods” that motivate us all toward happiness.

  1.  Good for others:  Our ability to cherish our most meaningful and important relationships lead to our happiness.  We were made to cooperate with our fellow man and the result is happiness for all.
  2.  Good at it:  It’s simple, do more of what you are good at and do less of what your not so good at.  Work out of your strengths and passions.  When we do what we were made to do we naturally come alive!
  3.  Good for me:  Take care of yourself!  Prioritize your own health and well-being.  Your spiritual, emotions, and physical reserves must be managed well for you to maximize your happiness.  Balancing those important aspects of life produce the fruit of happiness in you. It wouldn’t be an episode of THE UNSTOPPABLE LIFE without some clear actionable steps.  Specifically, what can be done today to improve overall happiness?  (*First, read what I read the morning before studio recording)

Ok, you want to start today?  Here are 5 things proven to improve your outlook on life and subsequently your overall happiness.

  • 3 Gratitudes:  Everyday for a set period of time (try one month), at the end of your day write down 3 things that you are grateful for.  Easy as that.
  • Journaling one positive experience: Similar to the first option, at the end of your day journal about and reflect on some meaningful positive event that happened.
  • Exercise:  Pretty much self explanatory.  What are you waiting for?  Feel better, be healthier, look better, and release dopamine.  It all equals boosted happiness!
  • Pray/meditate:  There’s no better way I know of to bring perspective to our lives than to spend time connecting to the author of our lives.  If this was a ranking list, this would easily be #1. 
  • Random acts of kindness:  The sky’s the limit.  Encourage and bless others.  It not only makes them happier but it does the same to you.  Win-win!

We all want it.  So how can we get it?

Happiness is defined as “a mental or emotional state of well-being defined by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy.”
